how come people are so obsessed with BUYING designer puppies when they can go to the shelter and get a homeless dog and save a life for under 75 bucks....that fee usually covers vaccinations, neuter/spay surgery, and adoption fees??! shelters usually have all kinds of puppies that need homes, why not go to the shelter and save a life rather than spending hundreds of dollars on a dog that has the same four legs and and cute nose that a homeless dog has!?

ok maybe i shouldn't make it sound like nobody does this....i mean all 3 of my babies are adopted and i know a lot of people DO adopt (and you are AWESOME if you do) but it just seems like so many people are obsessed with what their dog LOOKS like, rather than what the dog means to them. it's just so sad....

oh and one more thing - the main reason dogs are homeless is from irresponsible breeding. i have owned and known some of the world's sweetest dogs who came from shelters. aggresion isn't why dogs are homeless because when aggressive dogs enter shelters, they are euthanized to prevent families from adopting a dangerous animal.

I think people don't adopt homeless dogs because they don't want to have to go through with having to train it and stuff. I would want to know why it's homeless in the first place ( is there something wrong with it ? ) . I also think people dont adopt homeless dogs because they seem more capable of carrying disease or something, homeless dogs are seem as dirty, and gross. But i don't mind, give it a good wash , and it can be just as good and/or better than a " designer" puppy !

Umm, they do! Every day.. But I think you think, that everyone who wants a dog should go to a shelter. That will never happen. People like certain breeds, and the dogs you find at the shelter, 9 out of 10 are BIG dogs.
Many people do not want a big dog. And as for puppies, I have never seen a puppy that was not going to be BIG.. I see lots of lab mixed dogs and puppies, and tons and tons of pitts at out county shelter.
Many people prefer to purchase their dog because they then know where it came from, it's history, it's parents history. This is important to a lot of us.
I have had many shelter dogs, and only kept a couple because the rest turned out to have serious issues I was not able to deal with at the time.
I have also done rescue and had many dogs in my home, re-homed a lot, an a lot had to be PTS because they had serious issues (bite, etc).
Rescue is a very hard "job", try it, and I mean have 10 dogs in your home with some issues then come back and ask again why nobody adopts them!
And not all dogs being bought are "designer" dogs.. A chihuahua is not a designer dog, nor is a Yorkie etc.. A designer dog is those dogs being mixed together that just make no sense, like a beagle and poodle, or a puggle. THOSE are so called designer dogs.
Some mixes have been around for generations, like the cockapoo, been around since the 1950's! Peekapoos, same thing been around for many years.
But people have the right in this country to buy anything they want, whether it be a dog, or a car. And most take that commitment seriously..
Most dogs in the shelters are mixed dogs, mixed like the neighbors dog got to my dog kind of thing..

The shelters are full because leash laws aren't enforced. If leash laws were strictly enforced dogs would not be breeding (nor attacking) out on the streets. The shelters are also full because we live in a throw away society and people are either to LAZY or to STUPID to handle their dogs. It all comes back to irresponsible ownership. Its not rocket science...the answers are so simple, but people will just keep ignoring the solutions and keep wailing about the symptoms.
I sometimes wonder how bad the overpopulation problem really is when you have shelters shipping in dogs from other shelters and other countries because they don't have enough. I also wonder why some shelters make people jump through hoops to be allowed to adopt a pet if they have so many. One woman who writes a pet column wasn't even good enough and was told she wasn't home enough to have one of their shelter dogs, and she works out of her home. It doesn't look like some shelters are trying very hard.
I do foster dogs for a local adoption group, but I have the breed I do is because I course and show them. I couldn't do it with a mixed breed, although they do make great pets for many people. I don't feel guilty about breeding, it isn't my pups in shelters. If you want to get angry at someone, get angry at the people that are causing the problem, not the people who decide to get a PB.
BTW, designer dogs are really just crossbreeds that some idiots are breeding on purpose. They are NOT purebreds.

Irresponsible breeders are not the reason for so many homeless dogs, trresponsible owners are. So many people get a dog or cat and after it is out of the puppy/kitten stage, they want to toss it aside for a new one. I agree that if the dog is not to be bred, it should be spayed or neutered. If everyone would do that, there would be many, many less dogs.

Because people who know much about dogs know that you have to bond with the dog at certain stages in order for it to be 'your' dog. People who don't know this, or who just want something to tie up in the yard will not spend enough time with the dog anyway, so it will end up back in the pound or running the streets.
Why do people buy designer shoes and throw them away? It's a consumer choice, and until people find a way to buy their own reality in the world, we can't expect them to find a place for a used dog.
When used dogs become profitable, they will be adopted. So far, that means the testing labs and the euthenasia product companies.

People do adopt homeless dogs. All the time. I myself once picked up a puppy. That puppy is now huge and the loveliest of my four dogs. Its a misconception that homeless dogs are all wild and biters. And if a few of them are, probably because their previous owners did not treat them well.

Why would anyone want to save dog's lives ? There are far too many dogs now. Dogs savagely attack over 250,000 people each year in the US and most of these attacks are on children. Dogs that people let roam free are responsible for severe depletion of native species, such as rabbits, raccoons, wild turkey, deer, etc etc.
Let us find out ways to bring dogs under control in the US.

I have always gotten my dogs at the shelter and so have my friends. So people do adopt them but everyone has their own ideas about what will make them happy. It is very instyle to have a small designer dog. At least you are realistic and you care and make it known.

about 10 years ago my parents got me a dog that was homeless from the pound... we found out that it had been left in a bag by the train tracks. So anytime a train would go by as she got older.. she'd flip out. she turned out to be very nasty. we know it was nothing we did because all of our other dogs are sweet as pie.
