Hiatus hernia- This is a form of diaphramatic hernia in which a portion of the stomach protrudes into the chest cavity through the aperture created by the esophagus (foodpipe) as it leads to the abdominal cavity. (4) Bleeding from the lower end of the esophagus or stomach.
Surgery
(1) When there is severe and repeated hemorrhage from the stomach or esophagus.
(2) When nutrition is interfered with by obstruction of the passage of food.
(3) When pain is unbearable and is repeated over a prolonged period.
(4) When a portion of the stomach becomes caught in the hernial sac and is not released.
Treatment:-
(1) Eating only small quantities of food at one time.
(2) Walking or standing for about half an hour after each meal.
(3) Sleeping propped up on pillows.
(4) Eating a diet free of greasy, fried, highly seasoned foods.

Hi I also suffer from reflux but I don't have a hiatal hernia, I take ranitidine hydrochloride 300mg, I take two tablets every night at bedtime, and now the reflux is under control. I feel very sorry for you as suffering from reflux is bad enough without having to contend with a hiatal hernia as well, hope something gets sorted for you.

have u tried prilocec? That's what i use for hiatal hernia and esophageal erosion and it works well for me.I am not obese, but could lose 20lbs.Weight definitely is a factor, maybe ur doctor is talking about gastric bypass surgery. That is a surgery to help u lose weight and from what I understand from people who have had it,it is a miracle. It is however, quite expensive if u have no insurance to cover it,but is worth it.Obesity can cause many other problems and diseases as I'm sure u know.Better to put out the money for this surgery than any other.

If you have a hiatal hernia, sometimes you can alleviate the problem with loosing weight, how much do you weigh. The protruding is the stomach pushing into the diaphragm up and causing the problem. If it's this bad even loosing weight isn't going to help. I would guess that your going to have to have surgery to help this.

I take a nexium 40mg every morning, which keeps my stomach acid at bay, and allows me eat normal things, that otherwise would make me ill. Its too late to take this tablet when the problem occurs... Its a preventative pill to be taken beforehand.
Have you had an endoscopy, a camera inserted to see whats happening? This should be done before any surgery is considered.
Poor diet contributes.... have you looked at what you are eating and drinking? I think you are taking too many tablets. You need to reassess your situation, and start again

Because of your weight you may have complications after surgery too, like poor wound healing, respiratory problems, etc.
