I suggest reading some of the following books:

"Why Buddhism"
"The Still Point: Dhammapadda"
"Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life"
"Living Buddha, Living Christ"
"Tap Dancing in Zen"

I also suggest finding out if your community has a temple, and calling to find out when you can visit. Many temples have introductory medidation classes, or open meditation services, and after you have attended a few, you may join the sangha (religious community, or congregation) and help out around the temple/study under a teacher of Buddhism. If your community had temples of more than one tradition (Zen, Tibetan, etc.), visit each and see what suits you.

If you cannot get to a temple, see what resources you can find online. Jewel Heart, which is stationed out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, has online teachings.

Set up an altar in your home with some focal points that are meaningfull to you, find a cushion or chair that can rest in front of it, and set up a time to meditate every day. Try walking meditation too, in gardens or parks, or even in your own back yard--be mindfull of each step, concentrate on each breath, try to radiate compassion for all the beings around you.
