How thick is your wallet?
Buy a Nikon D50 - better bang for your buck. Excellent, true life quality pics.It will you set you back by about $1000.
Canon S2-IS - excellent camera. Around $400. Do a good research online. Plenty of resources. You do not need to talk to any photo shop, or anyone else - you do not always get right advice. Not everyone will deeply understand your needs.
One golden rule about digital cameras: Higher Megapixel/lower megapixel does not really matter, unless you want to blow up the picture to large size and still maintain the clarity. Then high megs. are of value. If you are just a plain home photographer, usually keep pics in the 4x6 frame, save your money and go for a 3 or 4 megs. It is plenty.
Photo stores push higher megapixels as something you need, a must have item. Wrong.
First ask yourself what you will use for, now and in future, and buy the one that will exactly suit your requirements. Web is your place to learn.

I like my Canon quite a lot. There are a lot of different models at different prices, so gift shopping for one would be easy.
If the sky was the limit as far as price goes? I'd vote for the new 10 pixel Sony that's due out soon.

Canon is most reliable, sony's break to easily, HP is not good for the price, and never get a nikon...too expensive.
