Ok, I have no idea what I'm doing...I recently inherited a 1 1/2 yr old Nanday Conure. He's bitting every time I touch him in his cage, and I don't mind, but I'm afraid to get him out because I don't think his wings have ever been trimmed, and added to the fact he's...scared, I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? I really need to do this, because I just love Maxy (he's so cute!). Thanks.

PLEASE! You need to start reading everything on having a companion bird, This yearI bought an African Grey and a Cockatiel and I read every thing I could buy or find. There are all kinds of places on web. I would go to pet store and get a boook and a magazine to read now. You can go to www.companionparrot.com or just hit pets or search parrots you will find 100's of places to check out. Now you can open cage door and stay close but act like your not hovering, you have a big job ahead you need to gain his trust and take care of him, you need to feed him pellots fruit veggies, snacks and feeed him some out of hand, You cant feed the some things like caffien, chocolate and theres a few more things you cant keep a parrot in a cage all the time They need at least 3 hours a day out of cage II hope hes got toys and perchs but just go on web, you will learn quick and youll be having a bird who loves you and you should see a Avien vet first chance, You will see all kinds of info and Parrot Stuff on web. Look into mns groups or yahoo groups for bird owners youll really learn some great stuff, Good Luck

When I got my sun conure he was very, very hand shy. It took a long time to get him to trust me enough to step up to my hand. And even now, four years later, he will get on my hand, then run up my arm to my shoulder where he feels safest.

Birds are very territorial about their cages. You just have to be patient. The person who feeds and waters and talks to them the most will eventually win over their trust.

Sunny... (the name he had when I got him), is quite loving now. I have no idea how old he was when I got him. He loves treats.

I have him, a love bird, an African Grey and a blue and gold Macaw, a dog and a cat. I love them all. Each has their own personality. Max is the name of my miniature long hair dachshund, and I call him Maxy all the time.

He will come around. It is a big change for him. New owner, new home. Lots of patience and you will eventually win the day!

Oh, and do go to bird sites and read up on them. There are many good sites with excellent ideas.

Oh-oh...first, his cage is HIS territory, and he is defending it by biting you. Please refrain from doing this anymore. Also: does he respond to the "step-up" command? Can you ask the previous owner about this? One very important piece of advice: do NOT feed Max ALVOCADO - EVER. It is DEADLY for him to eat. There are soooo many things to learn, but you will have tons of fun and the bond between yourself and Max will grow in due course. Nobody can answer this very general request "please help" in a few words on this forum. Email me at for what I hope will prove "sanity-saving" advice for the BOTH OF YOU. Don't worry, everything will be cool...

In addition to the other excellent responses to your question, I would add this: Always remember that you can never MAKE a parrot do anything. You can only make them WANT to. Enticement is usually the best method.
