I believe the knives were planted by men placing the food carts onboard.
And more accurately... I think they were box-cutters.

You can still get knifes, even possiblity guns and explosives past many of the secuirty, also you have ways to sneak back fences and around areas of the airport, you can bribe workers and more.

that's halfway understandable ...
what baffles me is why all aircraft had those flimsy cockpit doors .... for maybe $2-3K per plane none of this could have happened.
