I am trying to get my first credit card, but I just got denied and they said my score was to high. Does this mean I am to much of a risk, for an unpaid bill or something? Any details anyone can share with me and any help that can be given would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

You should be able to get a credit card from just about any bank that offers a VISA or MasterCard. Look in your local Sunday paper or on line to find a card with either a low interest rate or no annual fee.

If this is your first card, keep your credit limit to $1000 or less. This way, you won't get into trouble by over-extending yourself.

I got my first credit card with Discover. They didn't give me very much to start with but over time they gave me a little more as I built up my credit with them. If you do have unpaid bills, they will usually go on your credit report and stay there for about 7 years or so. I think the best thing you can do is pay whatever money you owe. It won't go away by itself, especially not any time soon. In the long run it is better to have a decent credit history rather than a record of unpaid bills. If you don't have unpaid bills then you need to contact the credit bureau and go through the necessary steps to dispute the charges. If you want to buy a house, rent an apartment, get a student loan or any other kind of loan, you will need good credit.

Was your score too high, or, not high enough?

Call the company that denied you and ask them to, explain, to you, the reason for denial.
