This is easy. I work in an animal shelter. The best dog is a dog that you fall in love with. One you know you can handle. Many older people choose older dogs because they are potty trained and less hyper active. That doesn't mean you have to get a dog the sleeps all the time. Unless you sleep all the time. Get a dog that matches your life style. Whether its a faithful Labrador or a playful Bichon. Let the pet pick you. ;) Just remember to read about the breed. Each dog is bred to show certain personality traits. The average life span for a dog is 12-14 years. Most dogs calm down at age 2 or older.

for an older person I would suggest getting a smaller dog that isn't too hyper and one that tends to attach to a single person so it'll be there to protect you. Two good breeds but might cost a little money would be a Shiatsu(pronounced like Shitsu) or a Pekingese. My older neighbors have 2 Shiatsu's and I a Pekingese and they're really nice dogs but can be mean if their owner is in danger. My Pekingese cost around $300 for a pure bred about 12 years ago but it was worth the money.

While I am particularly fond of Chihuahuas, I would have to say that a dog with a good and happy disposition is definitely the Bichon Frise. Not only does it make a good companion, it is a quieter dog and it is easy to train. The big plus is that the grandkids can enjoy him, too. He is hypo-allergenic.

An easy going, mature dog. A dog that has gotten over it's puppy crazyness! A small dog would be good. There are some small breeds that can be litterbox trained.

I would say a Yorkie. Mine is a male and he was very easy to house train and he is so sweet. He lets me know when anyone pulls in our driveway. He really requires little maintenance. I usually cut his hair really short for the summer because it gets so hot where I live and he doesn't shed, unless he gets a knot and pulls it out with his paws! Definitely a YORKIE.
