Since you are obviously interested in racing, you may wish to check out the museum at the race track, although it may be crowded that weekend with the all the race fans and may be heavily biased towards "IndyCar" racing and not F1. Google "IMS museum".
As far as the typical big city tourist sites, the White River State Park is where to go. It includes the zoo, botanical gardens, state museum, American Indian museum, NCAA museum, etc. All are within walking distance of one another, and from downtown. There is also a free shuttle (google "Indy Circulator") that will take you to the park and around downtown.
If you are looking for atypical tourist attractions, then there are hundreds of those and you'd have to be more specific on what you are looking for.

We attend festivities for the Indy 500 every year. The zoo is on our must see list after the Speedway Museum. If you are into history, there is a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient memorial downtown along the river walk. They rent peddle boats & bikes there as well. The Benjamin Harrison home is interesting a gorgeous if you want to see a presidential home.
I love Indy. It is a beautiful, clean city with lots to do. Have a great time!

There will be so much going on in downtown Indianapolis that you probably won't need to go anywhere else. There's a great car show on Monument Circle July 1st. There will be over $4 million dollars worth of exotic, antique, and collector cars on display. The best part it's free admission. A friend of mine is the co-creator of this event and is expected to draw around 60,000 people.

If you have transportation or don't mind a cab fare, go to Fishers (NE of Indy) and visit Conner Prairie. Huge outdoor living history museum. Worth the trip.

look on the strip - it rather is the place lots of the motels and tourist factors of interest are placed. The Downtown section is likewise incredibly usual, yet no longer almost as lots. as quickly as on the strip, the considerable strip section is sweet, as you may greater actual walk to the failings you opt to confirm and do. There are a great variety of motels, with a great variety of costs, in that section. My favorites are Venetian and Caesars, for greater larger-end motels. Flamingo is great once you're on a funds (as are Harrah's and Bally's), and Monte Carlo and MGM are stable places in between.
