You don't need the passport to purchase the ticket but will need it before boarding the plane. In fact when you apply for your passport you can actually give them the dates on your tickets in which you will travel in order to make sure that your passport arrives before you depart on your trip. But you should also make sure you don't need a visa to the country you will be visiting. Not all countries require a visa but some do. In the past for business I needed a passport, because I had my tickets and lived in a major city, I was able to get my photos taken, apply for the passport and then pick it up 24 hours later at a major US passport office in Los Angeles. After I had the passport was able to take the passport to the Embassy of the country I was going to and with my papers in place received my visa in a couple of hours. No cost for mailing all within 48 hours so it depends on where you live. As others have said you can apply at any post office who offers this service which can take longer. You can do an express mail so they receive it faster with a return prepaid express mail pack, this way it also will take a shorter period of time.

Assuming you are in the US.....
To purchase a ticket you do not need the passport, however you will need it to check in. Make sure the reservation is EXACTLY as your name appears on your passport. You can get an expidited passport with in 2 weeks. Normal passports arrive in 6 weeks and anyone 16 and over the fee is $97. Expedited services add $60. In order to receive your passport as quickly as possible, arrange for over night delivery service when sending you application and receiving your passport.
You can print the application off of the internet from the link below or apply at your local post office. Go to that website below and they can tell you the closest location to where you live to apply for a passport.
When you check in for the flight is when you will need the passport, make sure you sign it or it is not a valid document. The signature line is on the opposite page from your picture and information.

As you have been told, you don't need it to buy the ticket.
Since 9-11 the time to get a passport has increased!
Depending on where you live in the U.S. will affect your choices of how to get it.
If you have time, call your local post office, they will tell you which location to go to.
You can pay extra for an expedited, but that still takes 2 weeks!
Here is the URL for the goverment website on the subject:
http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/get_840.html
If you are in a time jam, there are several companies who will walk the paperwork through for you, for a charge. My husband had to do this last year.

I just went thru this in March.
You can book your flight without a passport, and in order to get a passport quickly, you have to have proof of a booked flight out of the country.
I had to go to the State Department and got my passport the same day,of course my situation was a family emergency overseas,if you are just traveling for fun you might want to call the State Dept. and ask.
a same-day passport will cost you $159.00.

I don't suppose you have to have the passport before you purchase, but it could take 6 mos to get one in the US so I expect you'd better wait until you have it. Passports cost around $100.

You don't need it when booking tickets.
If you go to a post office or city hall where they process passport applications, you can expect to pay around $100, plus about $60 for expedited service.

It can take up to 6 weeks to get a passport more or less. I would not get the tickets until you get the passport.

no you dont need one to purchase.
If you're in the united states you can go to the post office, or the county clerks and apply for a passport, theyre a set rate all over the country.
You pay for the photos, and you pay extra for expedited service.
