I have a 6 month maltese **** tzu puppie. He loves to jump on my couch. As a puppy he did this. So I know this is my fault. I want this behaviour to stop. Its not the sitting quietly on the couch that bothers me its that he retrieves his toys and then comes running jumping on the couch. How can I stop this behaviour. Poor little thing its not his fault but I have to stop it before it gets any further.

Take your pup off the furniture and say "Off!" Teach your puppy early on that you do not favor her sitting on the furniture.

2. Be consistent. It's important that you don't allow your dog to jump up on furniture one day and then punish her the next time she jumps on the couch.

3. Try not to leave food on the countertops and tables. These are temptations that a dog in training cannot resist.

4. Limit your pup's roaming area to places that don't have furniture with nesting qualities if your dog jumps on furniture while you're gone.

Alright, the first thing you need to know is that your dog's breed is not a swear. It's spelled Shih Tzu. Yours is a Maltese/Shih Tzu. Now as for the couch, whenever he goes up there, set him on the ground and let him know what a good boy he is for "staying down". I realize this is a little crazy at first, but he'll learn those words just as soon as food is involved. When you're throwing his toys for him, and he brings them to the couch, remind him to "stay down" as he is approaching - and every time he does it correctly he gets a little treat. I had a dog that was a little slower than most, so I ended up using bits of his dried food as a "treat" and he didn't know the difference. He was just so happy that I was praising him and he was getting a treat that the make up of that treat was secondary. This is good, cuz a small dog can become overweight quickly with too many treats! Good luck, and remember that patience and love can go a long way!

Try this. Take an empty pop can and put two pennies in it,then tape it shut. When the dog jumps on the couch, say "off!" and throw throw the can AT THE COUCH NOT THE DOG. Dogs don't like this noise. He will start to think that the couch is making the rattle and won't want to "activate" it. Believe me it works. Careful. Don't hit the pup with the can though. You will make him afraid of YOU.

Remove him from the couch and firmly say NO when he acts out. And dont let him back up just cuz he gives you those cute little sad eyes. Consult a prefessional trainer if this doesnt work after a few weeks. Its best to train your dog while hes young anyways.

They make a motion detector that emits a very loud beep for about three or four seconds. If you go to dog training devices in yahoo shopping you will find it.
