The best thing you and your boyfriend can do is monitor the situation.

Do a Yahoo or Google search on depression and read the literature from Mental Health agency's.

There you will read that if the depression continues for a prolonged period (usually more than two or three days) consult with a qualified professional. Your family doctor or the person in question's family doctor is usually the best place to start when you look externally.

Good luck and ignore the other postings that make light of this situation as this can be a seriously problem that goes untreated in many adults.

I cannot believe the idiots who gave you stupid answers!
If your boyfriend's Dad has depression, you can help him by
listening to him - sometimes people who are depressed feel that
no one is listening to them, or cares about them. Is he on meds?
You may want to check out & see & if not, recommend them.
I am on Cymbalta, a new drug & it's helping me alot. Does he
have alot of medical problems? sucidal? Being informed does
help - alot of people do not understand depression. There is a
website - Depressionhurts.com, you may want to check out -
they have excellent tips there. Do all you can to make him feel
needed/wanted/loved - you have no idea how much this helps.
People just don't understand how you feel.... also counseling
helps - if he can't talk to his son or anyone else - I would suggest this also.

Talk to him. Find out what situations trigger his bouts of depression. I personally don't believe in prescribing drugs or any of that crap. I think depression is all psychological.

Also, I recently read that one of the leading causes of depression is malnutrition. Does he eat healthy?

Is he married/does he have a girlfriend? Maybe there's something missing in his life.

It isn't your job to help your bf's dad through depression, he needs a medical doctor.

Talk to your boyfriend about taking his father to places that might like him. If you really love your boyfriend, you can also take his father out to the park, mall,to watch a good movie, etc. If he does not like going out then you pick up some movies, maybe funny movies like "Friday" or any other kind but not drama.

Keep an eye on your bf...it's often genetic.

Keep him out of stressful situations, focus on the fun things, try not to get too heavy or serious about things.
