In my book the #2 isn't the most popular the # 3 lead pencil is so #2 is still #2 also the # refers to the hardness of the lead not the size

The # designation on a pencil is the hardness of it's lead content not by it's popularity. The #2 pencil is the easiest to write with so it's the most popular.

Great question. Much like Prince Charles is waiting for his mum to kick off...#2 is waiting for his mum, #1, to write off into the big pencil sharpener in the sky. Then he can become #1 and marry that felt tip marker he has been seeing in secret.
