doves what ever they will start in a far away place like a friends house and use the sun to make thier way home as long as you keep them in the coop for a month or two

You can always make a piegon farm. People pay big bucks for them at weddings and they always fly back to their home. Just raise them, keep them fed, and they will always come back. as far as knowing when to let them out? Id say when they start fluttering around. I've always wanted a pair of piegons for my back yard. Not caged, but with a nice birdhouse so they could fly around during the day and come back home at night.

What I did with mine was, when I got them, clipped their wings and let them in the coop. When they molted and got their feathers back, they always stuck around.

I would not recommend clipping the wings unless you got a secure pen and know just how to do it. If you hit a blood feather it could cause problems.
