Do you lie to get them to confess so you can put them in jail? Nevermind, that doesn't really matter.
Here's the thing: A sin is a sin is a sin is a sin. Lie, cheat, steal, murder, etc. Based on your concern with hell and forgiveness, I can only assume you believe in God and Jesus. Therefore, my stance is that when Jesus died on the cross, he died for our sins. All of them. He didn't say to the liar "when you stop lying, I will forgive you" or to the glutton "once you have figured out your problems, come to me." You lie for the greater good... and while its still a "sin"... you sin everyday. If you ask for forgiveness, He will forgive you.
That's what makes God so great.

Who are you Superman? If your a police officer and its your duty then stop taking your job home with you. First you need to get right with God. Get into a right relationship with Him. He doesn't say "Except for Police officers, all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God." (Romans 3:10) But says All have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. What is God's Glory you ask? His Rules (10 Commandments) The man who can keep all of them is considered perfect and able to recieve God's righteousness and be placed in fellowship with God. That means none of us humans. WE DON'T KEEP THE LAW! But in God's case the punishment is eternal separation from Him (ie HELL) Currently although you don't believe in him or ask His forgiveness you still can feel God's presence. Think of not being able to ever feel Him. Ever hear Him tell you anything. When you cry out in pain, " Lord Help Me." Nothing. That is just a small small sample of Hell. It is not His choosing that you be eternally separated from Him but YOURS. You choose not to accept His provision for escape.
So God himself provided a way of escape from this Hell. Jesus Christ. Jesus says, I AM the WAY, The TRUTH, The LIFE, NO MAN COMES TO THE FATHER BUT BY ME." (John 14:6) That means by no other means can you reach GOD. He set the rules out. Not us. We either follow His rules or we choose not to and receive the due punishment.
With all this said your comment about not needing forgiveness is spirtual Russian Roulette. You will die. You will go to Hell on your own accord. Or You can choose Life and God by choosing the Way in which he provided for you.
Read John 3:16, Romans 3:10-23, Romans 5:10-12, Romans 6:23, Romans 7 and 8:1.

As a Christian i say no. If you accept Christ as your savior and ask forgivness for the things that you do that are wrong (maybe sorry that you need to lie... or saying something that was unessesary or .. stealing candy from little children) then your good. The part that counts is having a relationship with God. Doing bad stuff will not send you to hell. no one is perfect- we are born human and therefore no tperfect :) That is why you need God.

Have you ever heard the phrase: Two wrongs don't make a right.
Same applies for you and the criminals you get to confess. He wants you to obey his law. One of his laws is "Thou shall obey the laws of the land." Even if you feel the law is bad, such as paying taxes. Just because you get them to confess doesn't mean that you did the right thing. God is the judge. He says revenge is his. And, no, it doesn't mean you will go to hell, UNLESS you do not repent of your sins. But then you already stated that you won't. You don't have to lie, you chose to.

I have never believed that God sees things in black and white.
I believe God is complex, and He is able to see unique situations like yours and understand and sympathize.
That being said, I think He still prefers honesty. If you're making an attempt to tell the truth without being deceptive, I feel He'd appreciate that more.
Blatant deception for personal gain is His greatest issue.
And I don't deny He will consider that before deciding your fate.

Think the Book of Exodus.... read the Mosaic Law.... it said you will not bear false witness against your nieghbor.... lets bring that to light... you shouldn't lie about people.... Now lets go fruther.... You have to work out your own salvation with God. And that is through His Son, Jesus Christ. If you ask for God's forgiveness I am sure you and He can work it out.

You will not go to hell for lying-every single person (except Jesus Christ) sins. However, you will go to hell if you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior and if you ask him to forgive you of your sins. I fyou are really serious about becoming a Christian and getting to have eternal life in heaven, then start going to church, get a Bible and read it! Also pray to God to guide you!

That is doing something good. As in a spy/undercover detective. There is nothing wrong with that. There should be nothing to ask for forgiveness, because you are doing it to lock away the evil people in the world. I'm all for it!

No you will not go to hell. It does not exist as a physical place nor does our all-loving God condemn us to it. Sins and hell are purely human constructs designed by the early church leaders to control the masses through fear-based living.

Right is right, and it will never be wrong.
Wrong is wrong, and it will never be right.
There is never a right reason to do wrong.
There is never a wrong reason to do right.
Doing wrong should never be an option.
The Bible says all liars shall have their part in the lake of fire.
The Bible also says that the devil is the father of all lies.
There is no excuse to lie, no matter what the cost.
