The strongiest usually were the ones that survived but some that were just smart or paranoid enough. But that is not why people say they need to stay indoors. There are many reasons for that; they are safer, they won't reproduce if they are not spayed or neutered, they live longer, and if you cared about them you wouldn't want to see them hurt so you protect them as if they are a child because they cannot defend themselves against predators.
Pets are very beneficial to people for many reasons; lower blood pressure, fewer heart attacks, and they have even awarded many animals including cats for saving humans lives.

I don't think cats NEED to stay indoors. I'm sure they could survive outside. But anyways to answer your question, they probably did survive in the wild before their domestication. The cats maybe just adapted to the indoors when people took them in as pets. Its the most reasonable answer i have.

How did they survive? They didn't.
What do you suppose the average lifespan of a feral cat is? The last I read, it was about two-four years. Indoor cats can live into their teens.
Ourdoor cats are exposed to traffic, other cats, stray dogs, wildlife, bored teenagers, and vengeful neighbors. Indoor cats are not.
Outdoor cats have to fend for themselves rain or shine, be it 20 degrees or 120 degrees. Indoor cats are comfy and get to be part of the family.
I think that explains itself.

Cats "need" to stay indoors, like people "need" to fasten their seatbelts. It's not immenient death if you don't, but it's not recommended. I find it hard to be sad for people who let their cats out to roam in a city (mine is more than a million people) and their cats get run over. Duh. My cats don't get how the tap in my sink works, how could they possibly navigate traffic? Prior to domestication cats had very few natural predators and would have survived quite well - just look at Australia who happens to have a ton of ferral (wild) cats.

i do no longer understand any first rate veterinarian-counseled motives, yet i might say it rather is principally for concern of the cat being run over. additionally, incredibly some cats over listed here are declawed, and if so then yet one greater reason may be loss of protection against different animals. even however, once you're out interior the country the place street site visitors is at a minimum and your cat has claws, I see no explanation for it to be stored interior. Curious as to different what different motives may be besides. And as Irnya's saying, additionally because of the fact in cities/suburbs, a cat is extremely in all probability to pass on people's substances; i did no longer think of roughly that one! it rather is in all probability because of the fact my neighbor's exterior cats opt to pass in our backyard, and that i do no longer concepts it because of the fact it aspects something for my cat to do. So yeah, i think of interior the country it would be fantastic, yet merely no longer something carried out (or must be carried out) interior the city or suburbs. that's in all probability why it rather is seen a modernized theory now because of the fact a majority of people now stay interior the greater populated aspects.

I think cats are kept indoors not only for their own safety, but also that of neighborhood critters. I used to have an "outside" cat, and he came back several times a day with a fresh kill. If that doesn't bother you, fine, but think of your neighbors.

in the wild before their domestication there were no cars, traffic, and mean, bored little kids who think its funny to do cruel things to animals.
