I might guess 40 lb dumbbells in each hand would be a good challenge for an average male.
If you are considering training in this way, my suggestion would be to work with 30 lb (75% of maximum) dumbbells for sets of 10-12 reps.
Dumbbell training is very effective - really increases your range of motion. Can I also suggest flat flys for the outer chest and deltoid? Decrease weight again - to 20-25 lb dumbbells.
Good luck!

I'd say 25 on each dumbell. If I argued with someone for some time, I could be persuaded to go as high as 50 on each dumbell for 1 measley rep.
I see the above answer about pressing your body weight, and I too have heard that many many times for years. Average guy off the street? CAN'T DO IT!

It depends on what you mean by average. Size DOES matter, as well as life style. Last I heard through the national "average" was about 100#

One and one half your body weight with one arm.
Average is not a norm.
