If this occurs frequently it could be a type of seizure (focal or complex partial seizure). Licking and/or chewing like you describe are often seen in these types of seizures thought to be linked to secondary canine epilepsy. Check out the videos below. The first is a dog experiencing a focal partial seizure primarily involving his face. Lots of chewing and licking. The second is a complex partial seizure called a fly-bite seizure where the dog bites at an "imaginary" fly and then also goes through the motions of swallowing the "non-existent" fly causing some licking and chewing.

The most common time for a dog to have a seizure is when they are relaxed and quiet. Since this licking sometimes occurs while you are sleeping, I would have a vet check her out to be safe.

Good luck with your dog, and hopefully the licking is simply licking and nothing more.

My Yorkie did the same thing frequently, but not constantly. Since she enjoys home-cooked, organic chicken and beef, the condition of her teeth & gums are not as good as a dog who chomps on kibbles and bits. I try to brush her teeth daily to supplement the annual dental visit to the vet. Also, I feed her bits of broccoli, red pepper, apple, pear and more solid fruit/veggies.

If your dog has bad breath, it's a sure sign of tooth decay/gum disease perhaps. The vet can advise you about that.

My dog licks her lips when she feels nauseous - usually when she has an empty stomach. I've found that by dividing up her daily feedings into smaller meals twice per day she does not do that anymore.

Just do not overfeed her.

It could be allergies. But we have a terrier mix that does the exact same thing, only she licks the floor as well. She was diagnosed with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). No seriously, she was!

If this is just recent, then check her gums and teeth and around her face, maybe something is bothering her. If she has always been like that then check with the vet.
