Well, you'll want a bicycle. I don't know your money situation, but you can easily spend thousands. I don't recommend that till you know more. But don't get a bike at Wal-Mart or any other "general" store. To really enjoy it, you want a bike that is well-made and fits you properly, and the only place to get that is at a bike shop.

Look for a shop that carries used bikes, along with a big selection of new bikes.

Tell them what kind of riding you think you'd like to try, and how much you can spend. They'll show you the options and help you out. You won't find high pressure sales at a bike shop, these folks are also enthusiasts who just want more people to enjoy the sport.

Find a local club.

In Houston, I recommend heading over to Memorial Park. There is a small loop where many cyclists ride in the evenings (usually M - F). Talk to people.

Don't expect to be able to keep up with everyone on the bike initially.

The Texas state parks have great bike trails for mountain biking. Get a good mountain bike and go have some fun. Road biking is fun too...There's lots of bike rally's to attend. Go to a bike shop and find out organizations to join. Lots of clubs! Assuming you meant...bicycling and not motorcycles :-)

Before going to the dirt, I would gain some confidence, handing skills, and endurance on the road. Otherwise, you are more likely to get frustrated and bag it altogether. Usually the more $$ the bike, the lighter it is. You don't want a heavy bike to chug around, again, you'll get frustrated and lose interest.

Read Bicycling, Mountain Bike action, Bike or read their respective websites online. Online check Cambria Bikes website if you wanna see real cool bikes ( www.cambriabike.com) or wheelworld ( www.wheelworld.com)---I suggest you ride both kinds during a test drive in your nearest BIKe shop. Prepare for the ride of your life!
