I lived in South GA for several years, you want to try and stay out of the city limits of Atlanta if at all possible, NW is the best, cost of living is atrocious, the farther out the better, not sure about public transportation in the area as it's been quite some time since I've lived there (i.e. subway, trains, etc.), although the highway system, while horribly crowed, is quite decent .... you won't have any trouble finding anything to do or see or things for the children. There are several amusement parks in the area (my favorite place has always been Dahlonega, GA) ... Weather is awful pretty much year round! Too far south for decent snow most of the time, just far enough north for massive ice storms ... You usually only have to worry about the aftermath of hurricane's, mostly rain ... it's hot and muggy and swamplike most of the summer, chilly and damp most of the winter, a few weeks in the fall and again in the spring are decent ... It's main attraction is location, within easy distance of both mountains and beach, if you like historic places, there's tons to do and see all over the state. Best piece of advice anyone will ever give you about living in Atlanta? ALWAYS know when the sporting events in the area end, and make SURE your not anywhere near there! Atlanta has professional football, baseball, basketball, as well as several large universities with extensive sports programs. And most important of all, avoid at ALL COSTS the Atlanta Motor Speedway during race weekend! Good Luck, hope this was helpful!
