Apparently, they don't combust spontaneously. They just, sort of, smolder to ashes.

They're usually unconscious people whose clothing catches fire from a nearby heat source and then the fats in their bodies smolder until there's not much left of them.

I read a cool book about this once. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of it.

The book detailed arguemts for and against the reality of spontaneous combustion. The author of the book was very certain that it has happened. He provided what evidence he had, based on historical evidence.

The conclusion was that no one knows for sure if it really can happen, but among those who believe it can, no one knows why or how.

The historical cases show similarities between victims of spontaneous combustion, They were all over 60 yrs old, overweight, sedentary, had bad tempers, of mid to low income ,and were usually alone at home when it happened (one of the big reasons some people don't believe it can happen for real). The only people who have reported witnessing someone sponatneously combust, were usually suspected of setting the person on fire themselves.

But here's the thing I can't get my mind aroung.... I have seen burn victims. It takes such extremely high heat to reduce a human being to dust that, for that to happen you would need a crematory oven. In the places where people have spontaneously combusted ther is nothing that can generate that kind of heat, and if there was, everything including the house would be burned to the ground. This has not been the case Usually it is only the area on which the pearson has been actually in contact with at the time that shows burn, the whole room will be covered in an oily residue, but there will be minimal actual burn. The person usually does not burn away completely. There are usually unburnt partial lower legs & feet or forearms & hands (sometimes with unburnt clothing still on them- one guy was sitting on the tiolet and his unburnt pajama pant legs and slippers with legs & feet inside were found still sitting there in front of the toilet with the rest of him nothing but dust)

It sounds nuts.

There are not fast easy answers on this one. Sorry

there is no such thing as spontenous combustion. Its an urban legend. the victims of such a 'phenomenon' are actually victims of foul play. people with too much time on their hands manage to write up theories to justify it though. take your pick. believe it or be educated.
