I only got it on once when my sister did it for me. i can't seem to lift my upper eyelid high enough so that it does not get in the way of the contacts.

Don't try lifting the lid. Instead, push it backwards and pin it just underneath your eyebrow. Pull the lower lid down with the middle finger of your other hand and insert the contact with the index finger of the latter hand. This works well for me.

Its a natural reaction for your eye wanting to close when something is about to get in there. Pull down your lower eyelid, have contact on index finger ready to go, look directly at the contact, and insert. No worries about your upper eye lid. It is essential to look directly at the contact, so you get it in the first try. Good luck.
