How do I become better at Critical Reading?

I never read at a young age, and I repent of my action. Now I do badly on the Critical Reading portion of the SAT test, and my "teacher" barely spends anytime on that topic. Can somebody please give me some advice because I do not want it to kill my overall score?

read often...that's about all you can do. Just when you read, try and read lots of different things. Newspapers, books, journals, magizines. Editorials, factual articles, poetry, passages and short stories. And when you get done reading something. Go back, and ask yourself, why did I read this, what was the point?...
If you're reading something factual, try and pull out facts. Get a pencil and mark up the facts or try and make a distinction between the writer's words and the facts. If your reading something like poetry or a short story, obviously don't look for facts, but rather try and pull a meaning out of every sentence, every paragraph, every stanza, etc...start small, and build up. You'll see how an author can build something so complex. (makes it easier to tear apart when you're doing your critical reading.)

One thing that you can do is read a book and then go online and read reviews about it. Read what the reviews say, and ask yourself if you got the same information out of the book when you read it. The more you do this, the more you will learn to read more deeply into the meaning of words.
