I plan to have my close friend come everyday to give food/change water and scoop his litter.

The cat should be alright in that situation. As long as you make sure it has enough food and water and a place to potty. If you're having someone stop in and check on the cat every day, it should be more than fine.

Cats are very much self sufficient, but as long as someone comes to feed/water and change the litter box at least once every other day I think it will be fine. They need to make sure there is enough food to last until the next time they come to visit, as well as plenty of fresh water. A week should be fine, I'd get someone to stay there though if it were going to be more than that. I bet if you called your vet, they could answer any specific questions you have.

I've known cats to be left alone for a couple of weeks, but you need someone to come in and clean the litter pan, make sure they have food and water, and give them some attention. I did some cat-sitting for some friends and they let me stay in their house while they were gone, so I got to play with their three cats for a few days. If you can find someone you trust to live-in while you're gone, I recommend it--as an added bonus, your house will be occupied while you're on vacation, lessening the chance of a break-in.

Yes, food, water and scooped litter daily is important, but I think it depends on the breed of cat and its personality as to whether you should leave it for more than a week. I have had cats like Ragdolls and a Maine Coon cat that were very needy and cuddly. They got really upset if I left them for more than a few days. I had a Persian who didn't care if I was gone three weeks! You know your cat, so do what your heart tells you is best. The cat will physically survive if it's cared for daily, but it WILL miss you.

Cats are very independent creatures and she will be just fine while your gone as long as you have someone looking in on her daily. Just make sure she has plenty of food and water and that there is no way she could run out of either, but especially the water. You may also want to put down extra litter boxes so that she doesn't start using other items in your house if her box becomes to dirty for her to want to use it.

While some cats do have problems being left alone, many cats can be just fine alone. It really depends on how dependent on you (s)he is. If your cat is constantly needing your attention and affection, you might consider having her taken to a kennel for your vacation time, or have her live with the friend. Another option is to have someone stay in your house while you are on vacation, and watch the house and the cat. Look for someone you know you can trust and is reliable, and make sure they know the ground rules of your house, and how to care for your cat.

The kitty will be fine. Especially if you're having a friend check on it every day. Cats are independent creatures and can find many things to keep themselves occupied. One thing I always did was leave a note authorizing emergency vet care and the phone number of the vet - - - that way you'll feel better about leaving. Maybe leave a blank check / or some cash. Its funny because it kind of feels like you're leaving your child, doesn't it? :)

Your cat should be fine as long as:

1. It is provided with fresh food and water every day
2. Litter box must be cleaned frequently
3. Depending on where you live - make sure the temperature is reasonable within the house
4. Make sure nothing toxic/dangerous is within your cat's reach

That is fine - if someone comes in daily and feeds it, changes the soil tray and puts down fresh water, then your cat will sleep most of the time.

You have nothing to worry about - and it's crap that cats are scared of being left alone !
