I've been seeing all these preachers on the tv preaching how horrible they are and how satanic, but I disagree. I pride myself in being christian, but I don't see anything bad about them. I mean, there is witchcraft in it, but its bad verses evil...its not like the good guys in the book are going around killing people with evil or anything........I mean, they aren't my favorite books, but I don't see the problem if other people want to read them.

Ok, if Harry Potter is bad because of the sorcery...then wouldn't classic Disney movies be bad also? But yet its ok to watch them. For example: Aladin; Jafar was a sorcer was he not?

Yeah i totally agree. I mean what the heck the Harry potter series is my fav and i don't see any thing in it that could be unacceptable to any religion. ok there is witchcraft but isnt it really evident that the books are fiction and the main theme of the books is Harry Vs. voldemort more precisely Good vs evil...They are just creating a scene for the heck of it

I don't think Christians are allowed to believe in white witchcraft, if that description will serve. The Order of the Phoenix (and Potter and his friends) fight against evil sorcery by using their own magical powers. But Christians are supposed to believe that all magical powers come from the devil, so there's no such thing as a good witch. (Something about the only good X is a dead X?)
Now, here's a problem with that: Jesus performed magic. He started out changing water into wine, and got even more amazing as he went along. He even raised Lazarus from the dead! So, it is not that strange, is it, that modern magicians (wizards) consider him a major magician: a Magus, in fact. (Remember them? Gold, frankincense and myrrh at Christmas time?) So if all magical powers come from the devil . . . well, you see the problem here, I'm sure.
A simple vocabulary switch from "magic" to "miracle" does not do it for me; does it do it for you? Can you tell the difference reliably enough for your purposes? Well, lots of Christians get very confused on these issues. Try to be patient with them.

Witchcraft is witchcraft, no matter how you may want to think of it and it is condemned by God as wrong, an abomination, witches are to be put to death and as Christians, we are not to even go near it. IF God condemns it, doesn't it make sense that there must be somethiing wrong with delving into even watching it? How many murders do you have to see until if you see one on your doorstep that it does not bother you any more? Even being around it can pull you in and get you into it without you ever really realizing what is happening. That is why God says to stay clear away from it and don't even allow it near you. It may seem all innocent but so was the forbidden fruit till it bit like an adder. That is a snake. Very innocent till you get hooked into it, and then it becomes a very heavy weight you can't get loose from without a lot of help from God. I would not allow any of the Harry Potter books or movies in my home.

They believe that sorcery is from the devil, which is kind of an old fashioned way of thinking. Besides, God can do what He pleases, right? So why not give some people "magical" powers?
Anyhow, I'm Christian, too, and I think the books are great. But I would be careful not to use phrases like "I pride myself on being Christian" in the future. Pride is one of the seven deadly sins, remember?

I am a Christian (Roman Catholic) and love the Harry Potter books and movies. They are wonderful entertainment.
Perhaps the preachers who knock Harry Potter haven't really read them.
There are rumors that the author is a real life witch. But it isn't true. She just reads alot to research her characters. Good job.

Here is something else Christians think about Harry Potter:
IT IS GREAT! Those preachers don't realize what they are doing. JK Rowling is a member of the Church of Scotland, and you can see her faith woven into the books.
Here is a great website that you should check out...

The author is not a witch and the books are not evil, some christians just don't have much to with their free time so they invent evil.

The books themselves are not bad, the woman who wrote them, I've heard is a real witch. I have also heard that real spells were written in the books. That's just what I have heard. Magic like Rowling aparently practices is black magic, which is the devils magic, so I can see how the church would get upset with the books.

Actually, you were right the first time: it's bad vs. evil. There's really no good message in it. It's witchcraft being used to fight worse witchcraft, which doesn't really make any sense if you think about it.
God has told us that witchcraft, sorcery, spells, and divination are evil, so isn't it obvious why pastors are against it?
