I want to copy my DVD's for backup but don't want to pay a lot for a ripping program - any ideas of a good, simple-ish and free downloadable program? thanks!

Try this...
Its simple, and FREE

http://www.protectedsoft.com/download/dvd2avi_ripper.exe

It converts all files into the divx format (avi ) and rips dvds. I think it is region free. Any DVD could be ripped. Except those copy protected ones like game DVDs etc etc

You would need the divx codec to play the avi video files.
http://www.divx.com/ get the free version, it works great.

If u want a ripper that can Rip any DVD (including the new Sony Arcos Protection discs, u should try DVDFabDecrypter...which is "FREE"....... i works like a charm, and quite fast 2, also get DVD Shrink, 2 turn your around 8GB file from DVDFab to around the 4.7GB size 2 put on standard DVD's hope this helps (DVDFab rips everything, menus, languages, movie, extras, etc)

First, its illegal in the US but that doesn't stop the UK from making and selling their products here. The absolute best (copies in 3 mouse clicks) is CLONE DVD

dvdx is quite good.

You have to configure your preferences first, but thereafter its all one push of the button.

Much better than all of the early software that took about 5 steps.
