if it is a hacking continuous cough it could be kennel cough. Get to the vet to be sure. I have experience with kennel cough and it is very miserable to the dog, not to mention annoying to the owner.

Our Shih Tzu recently died and she had a hacking cough that ended up being a collapsed trachea from congestive heart failure. You need to discontinue the Benadryl and go see your vet. Coughing in a dog can be allergies but as in our case be something really serious. You need to ask for a chest x-ray to be done as well.

There are several things that can give your dog a cough. I would not hazard a guess without more info. The dog should be seen by a vet.

Your dog might be getting into something like paper and it gets stuck in his throat, or he may have a cold. Call your vet.

Has he been around other dogs? It could be kennel cough if he has. If he has you need to take him to a vet to get antibiotics.

since he is a little dog, you need to get him the dog food with the smaller bits kibbles. it is probably too big for his throat and he isn't chewing it right.
