Little Jack russell who has always been sensitive to noises is now becoming a liability to herself. If we have thunder or lightning and we are not quick enough to stop her going out she becomes so upset and out of it she actually colapses and once has been unconscious, have spoken to the vet who thinks she could be having a fit. Prevention is better than cure! so does anyone know of anything I can give her, herbal or whatever to keep her calm, but really I would like something I could give her that would work instantly. Last Nov 5th we put her on a course of herbal drugs that did workish! but fireworks and storms are not always that predictable! Had fireworks tonight luckily we were instantly there and kept an eye on her. She is still restless now 2 hours later. Any ideas?

Hi
I dont know where abouts your situated but here in the uk we can get a prepration from some health shops (holland & Barratt etc....They sell a natural herbal prepration called 'RESCUE REMEDY' it comes in a little brown eye dropper bottle u just put a couple of drops on her tongue...it works instantly...U can use it too when needed.
Its usually where the liquid herb treatments are...flower essences or Dr Vogels preprations...

Just a suggestion but maybe you might feel better if you wrap her in a little blanket & cuddle her when she's frightened.
I have a friend who also has a Jack Russell who is similar natured & when her dogs nerves are fraught she pops her in one of the baby carriers...you know the ones yo ustrap to yourself & pop baby into..it leaves hands free & babies usually settle coz they can hear mums heart beat...try one of those too.

Your Dog is an old girl now...give her comfort in the last years of her life.
Good Luck

He;s 12 years old. It would very difficult to help him with behaviour that would entail exposition to the noise he fears in a controlled environment.

I would suggest you gave him herbal treatment and if possible, come fireworks time ... Try to take him away from the noise.

I do not think any behavioural attempts are fair on older dogs. In human years. Humans become tolerant of noise/disruptions as they age so it is part and parcel of his age too!

Your Vet could also prescribe Clomicalm to avoid fitting if you cannot remove your dog from the situation (Fireworks) It works as a temporary measure.

if the vet thinks she may be having fits then it is his job to investigate further and recommend treatment. This vet does not sound very good to me, so take her to another one for a second opinion. Alternatively, if it is just a noise phobia then try a dog appeasing pheromone diffuser. They release the scent of a nursing bi*ch to settle the dog. Also bach flower remedies are good, and try not to coddle your dog when she freaks out, just put her where she feels safe with something to keep her mind off the noise. Play some music loudly. She will eventually settle down. But i'd avise going to the vets to see if she really is having fits, but it sounds like panic attacks to me.

me too-ours is comin up to ten and we have the same probs as you-we try lots of things and the herbal stuff sounds good but we've found that the best thing we can do is to make sure we are there to hold him and comfort him when it does happen-i dont think its fair to make an old dog go under sedation or try to teach new techniques to.our vet told us that theres plug in thing that emits a hormone from a pregnant ***** that makes all dogs calm down-makes them feel very secure etc but it is reasonably expensive and i dont suppose its 100% proven to work-i feel real sorry for you because it sounds a lot worse than ours but we've just decided to love him as much as we can when the noises start and hes gotten used to the idea that a big cuddle and a lot of stroking and reassurance from us is going to make the noises seem less frightening-i know its not much of a solution but if you got the love then pass it around-good luck!!!

I would listen to the vet. From what I've heard, Jack Russell's are all pretty much hyper. I would not adopt one, but am sure you love your pet. Try the herbal drugs again. Also, there are dog therapists, depending on what area you live in. You might have one "talk" to your doggie.

You need a desensitising program which won't trigger a fit, and you can use a new combination drug therapy that will keep her calm. You also need to learn how to behave around her to help her.
All of you need to stay calm, quiet and confident to help her feel secure. ever make a fuss about noise, never scream or shout around her.
You need to contact The Association of Pet Behaviour Therapists, their web address is below. They can find someone in your area who knows how to prescribe the medication and the treatment.

You could put earphones on with white noise on the dog!

I would contact some JRT experts such as at http://www.russellrescue.com/faqs.php4 and see if they have any behavoir modification tips or perhaps can recommend a way to desensitize him to loud noises.
