Their poo looks black and is hard -when I bought them 4-5 months ago it was mushy and light brown -which is the preferred consistency?

It's just like Troy B said give them lots of fruits and veggies. Now don't go giving them stuff that isn't fresh because they WILL NOT eat anything that isn't fresh.None of the can stuff either.Start off with an apple. If they are scared of it show them that you are eating it and they might eat it.That's how I do my budgie. No dairy products because thay are lactose intolerant. No avocados....that will kill them instantly. If the fruit has seeds pick them out because they contain toxins that can kill your keet.I hope this helps....feel free to email me if you need more info.

They do need gravel. My budgies are 13 years old and they eat millet, carrots, love apples, banannas, ORGANIC ! they love Romaine lettuce leaves. There is alot of water in lettuce. My Senegul parrots won't eat any fruit unless it is organic! Picky! But I wouldn't use a pellet diet, as the little birds have been used to seed, & if they don't eat the pellets they will starve. I give them organic oats, too! The the dry cereal. All my birds Love green beans! as a treat. Find a friend that knows birds, as the vets only cost you money, they are even more expensive than people doctors on their office visits, they are around here, anyway! I hope this helps!

Fruits and vegitables...I hope you are not giving it gravel...I would urge you to contact a vet that specializes in birds. Best advice I can give under the circumstances of this medium.

Perhaps introduce a softer (fruits) diet and in doing so remove constant access to seed / pellet.

Vegtables!!!
everytime I make dinner and there are greens, I keep a batch of raw and unseasoned, for my bird.
She loves spinach, aspagus, carrot top leaves, string beans.
She goes wild for lettuce
They also like fruit: apple, pear, peach and plums.
