I've heard Gen 38:9 used as a proof text against masturbation before, but I've found it lacking to a degree. A sensible interpretation of that text (within its context) sees it as a matter of Onan's disobeying Judah's instructions to impregnate Onan's brother's widow. The text never specifies that it is God's will that Onan should do impregnate his brother's widow. It only accurately narrates the conversation between Judah and his son. That some should apply this text as a universal prohibition of masturbation is overreaching. This was not the intention of the text.

I think there are different levels of sin and masturbat*** is a small one. There are some sins the bible says are an abomination, this is not one of them and I don't think it is as bad as fornication because you can do that all you want and you never have to worry about God allowing you to get a sexual disease from it although God's perfect sex plan is for marriage and fulfilling your desires through your spouse. Proverbs 5:18,19 say to rejoice in the wife of your youth and let her breasts satisfy you always. TheGreat sex was God's idea, He created to done in marriage but Satan wants to get us to fulfill our God-given desires through perverted and sinful ways which is second best to God's ways. Also God was angry at Onan for not raising up children to his brother not for pulling out if you read that section carefully and the only reason I can see masto as a sin anyway is that most engage in strong lust to perform it but masto or anything else married couple both comfortible with is O.K. My wife and I use this regularly when she's on her m. cycle or tired or just for fun to mix things up. I can't remember where but bible also say to man and his wife the 'bed' is undefiled which means anything goes that both are O.K. with.

The verse you're using is pulled out of context. Onan was condemned for a specific misdeed. It isn't about masturbation at all.
I suspect God isn't thrilled with masturbation either, but I can't provide any substantive verses to back that up. Either way, it's probably not the ideal, right?
Don't fall into the belief that says you have no self-control. It is difficult to control yourself maybe, but it can be done. Don't let sex rule your life.

Let's put it this way... God gave you instincts and then, he forbids you to do things those instincts tell you to do. Do you really think God is that hypocrite and sadistic? I don't. The bible is definitively not the word of God, but a book written by tyrants inspired not by the holy ghost, but by their selfish interests.
What a better way to control you than make you feel guilty for things that are normal and even healthy. My personal opinion it is OK to masturbate, unless it gets into a sick addiction that would prevent you from living a normal and healthy life.

all that nonsense about masturbation and homosexuality was written in a time that a group of people, who thought they were the chosen people, were just a small population, who wanted to grow. They needed more people.
They also believed in those time that the male sperm was the holder of the full child. Children came from sperm.
Of course they wrote rules about not losing sperm.
Funny thing is: thousands of years later, we still argue about those things, without even realizing what was written for which reason.

If you don't want to let it spill on the ground, make sure it spills in the toilet.
I don't know if it would be acceptable to god or not.

The bible does not say anything about masturbation at all. Although the bible does say lust and lustful thoughts are wrong (and they tend to go with masturbation).
Gen 38:9 had nothing to do with masturbation.
