Dogs are living creatures who need love and care. They are not toys to be set aside when you grow tired of them. I'm not sure she understands what shes asking for. Your thoughts?

it is time to give her a dog... if she would accept the responsibility..but to think about it and have doubt... try to have dog around the house for a week and let her see what she can do..
Most kids having dogs at younger age seemed to be more responsible just like adults having dogs around makes them walks and not be lazy..
She is 16,, not too young, not too old... give her a chance to know what she can do... she would probably know what is a toy and a pet..

I think at 16 she probably isn't aware of what all the dog will need but can be taught.

I think getting her a dog is one of the most wonderful, sane & loving things you can do for your daughter. Get a very young puppy so your daughter will have an opportunity to raise him and be like his mother.

When it is about love, instincts kick in and she will choose to feed and water, brush and walk her dog because she wants him to be happy.

She can learn how to be less selfish & more responsible by taking care of the pup. One day she may have children which will also need this care.

Dogs are our best friends and drain lonliness and misery from us with a simple look. 16 year olds often have a lot of emotional highs and lows and can benefit by hugging someone who will be completely non-judgemental and always loving.........something with lots of fur and energy.

Hopefully the rest of the family will love the animal too.

The thing that worries me is she thinks she wants a dog. As you pointed out they are a big responsibility. Are there any animal shelters in your area? Perhaps a month or so of volunteering taking care of the dogs there will open her eyes as to whether she's ready for the responsibility. Does a friend or a family member have a dog? Perhaps you could borrow the dog for a week, she might not be to happy when it eats her favorite pair of shoes or she has to take it for a walk on a crappy day. It would teach her a similar lesson.

Well first of all, a dog is a member of the family. So everyone has to want it. The dog can't just belong to one person. However, she can be responsible for the majority of chores concerning the dog. If she is sixteen, she won't be home much longer......she will be off to college soon. And I know what you are thinking......she will do the chores for two weeks and then someone else will be stuck with them..........YOU!!!Dogs are great therapy for teens and all ages. They unconditionally love you and are great stress relievers. I say get her the dog.Life is too short...............and if you have to walk it once in a while or play fetch..........enjoy the new companion.
Be sure and check out the humane societies..........so many great dogs there who need a good home.

I wanted a dog since I was 4, and I finally got one when I was 13. I bought it with my own money, and I payed for ALL the expenses. If she's willing to pay for the dog, and walk the dog, and do all the taking care of, herself, then she can get a dog. It's a bigger responsibility than you think. You say you'll do all those things, but when the time really comes, will you? You judge, is your daughter responsible enough? Does she always take care of her things, and do the things she's told to do?

I had a dog once, and now i have 2 cats. Pets are different than toys in a way that you dont put them aside. Its hard to resist those big brown eyes when a dog stares at you. Its also fun to play with them

Tell her that exactly. Also explain to her that taking care of a dog is 24/7 and that not all dogs are the same for care as some require more maintenance than others.

Your daughter probably wants a dog so she can show you that she is responsible or she just wants a good friend!
