Would it be such a bad idea to make four years of military service an option for someone caught as an illegal? I mean why put them in an overcrowded prison for tax payers to support if they are able bodied enough to serve in our military? Face it, we have to help Iraq rebuild their country. I don't forsee an end to this Middle East situation anytime soon, but would it be so bad to have people be productive and work for their citizenship, instead of skulking around the law all their lives? I'm not saying that four years of service should be the only thing that guarantees them citizenship, but it could be included as part of a fast track program that combines all of the other current requirements for citizenship. Of course they could be given the choice to serve or sit in prison. I'm not saying we should force someone to do this, but rather have this as an option so that a person could work for a living legally as well as earn their citizenship.

A couple of caveats:
They must comprehend English sufficiently to read and pass the ASVAB.
They must pass a background check, with US Agents allowed to view home nation crime records.
They must be at least the equivalent of a high school graduate

Do you want to make military service MANDATORY or OPTIONAL for illegal aliens? Your first two sentences sound that way.
I see two problems with imposing military service on illegal aliens, though. First, they would automatically get citizenship upon enlisting since as of now you have to be a natural-born or naturalized citizen to enlist. The still, small voices in Congress proposing the reinstatement of the military draft would have a field day (e.g.,"We want your illegals for the U.S. Armed Forces!").
Second, do you want to make this military service a blanket amnesty for the criminals who have snuck across the border? While I understand your point of view, there seem to be too many thorny issues involved -- apart from tracking down all the illegal aliens and offering them the option -- that taxpayers (voters, by any other name) wouldn't be able to get behind.

There are several problems there. First, a person forced into military service will not be someone you can count on in a fight. He might even turn to the other side.
Besides our prisons would not be filled by illegal aliens that are caught. When you catch an illegal alien you deport them back to their own country.
that is why we need a bigger better fence. So when we send them back, they can't jump the fence again.

Let me tell you a little story...When George Custer was at Little Big Horn...his 2 Indian scouts were there too. While the arrogant Custer stood on top of the hill and watched his fellow soldiers being slaughtered by the Indians..his 2 scouts started to take off their American Uniforms they were forced to wear because of their service to our Country as Scouts...when the Sgt in charge of them saw them he asked..."what are you doing?" One of the scouts responded with "This is not our War...its YOUR war. I am taking off this uniform and leaving." The Seargent was angry and went to Custer with this...Custer looks at the Seargent and says..."Let them go...theyre RIGHT..its not theyre War." Now tell me..why should we obligate illegal immigrants..most of them sooooo poor and at such a disadvantage put on a uniform and fight our War?" Why dont people like YOU...go take the ASVAB...and do all that is required ...and go and take up ARMS with the rest of our BELOVED TROOPS and fight the war of Terrorism? Hmmmmm??

No, whenever you force anyone to go to the military the people do not want to be, they would not be very effective. Plus, they shouldnt have to fight for a country that isnt very nice to them.

Totally agree with you. We house there children and pay taxes so they can go to our public schools and use our healthcare and other public facilities. Sacrifices should be made if you truly want to be a citizen here.

People should be in the military because they want to be. Otherwise they have no morale and not be able to win.
