I'm selling a 2006 car that I just bought new 7 months ago. Is there a sales tax on used car sales? if so, how is it paid? buyer pays at time of purchase, or does buyer get a bill from the state?

Buyer will have to sales tax upon registration of the car, it is not your responsibility, but the buyers.

ohh yeah, the sales tax hits every time a car is sold, cars are the only item charged tax when sold used in california. if memory serves the price the car is sold for should be written on the pink slip (there is a space for it) and the dmv charges the tax when the new owner goes in to register it. of course no one ever lies about how much the car sold for to save the buyer on the tax... that would be wrong.

buyer gets a bill when he registers in his name, based on the purchase price of the car.
