My old guy mastiff has cancer and is on a type of hospice. My other two dogs, another mastiff and a weimaraner seem to be acting more gently, slower near him, licking and grooming him. Do you think they know??

It seems that they do. I believe they also know when we are ill. I am truly sorry to hear about your beloved pet being ill.

As long as you aren't getting both dog for the sole motive of coaching them to be imply, then both would be excellent. By means of that I mean that you wish to have a family pet that would make burglars believe twice simply by it is presence and now not a dog that sits chained within the yard. Traditionally, lot of puppies had been proficient to work collectively. Smaller dogs had been the 'alert' puppies and called in the backup higher canine when there was hindrance. My dogs have naturally fallen into this roll. My cavalier is very alert and will sound the alarm and my bullmastiff comes running. At the same time the little man indicators to the 'hazard' the large one surely presents a deterrent. Be mindful that both breeds are VERY one-of-a-kind so far as generalized temperament goes. I have owned a doberman, however had been round rottweilers so much. They may be able to each be very loving, sufferer family pets. You DO need to make sure your Lhasa's are okay with better dogs. For those who had been planning on getting a dog, it wouldnt be as big of a deal, but you could under no circumstances be certain. Another thing to consider, both the Rottweiler or the Doberman may have entirely distinct excercise wishes than a Lhasa. They are working dogs and wish a number of bodily and intellectual stimulation. Good success. ADD: Aphrodite's description of a Doberman as a rule sums up the temperament and recreation degree of my doberman I owned. High-quality canine...And yes, he used to be a bit of bit snobby! :) I also only ever had a feminine canine round him as a 2d dog.

Of course they do! Did you know that a dog can smell cancer in a human before the highest technological equiptment can find it? They can also tell when a person is going to have a seizure hours or days before they actually have it. Dogs are so much smarter then anyone gives them credit for. People have been mistreating, neglecting and abusing them for so long and the fact is they are smarter than we are. In fact if they had thumbs we would be their pets!!!!!!!!
Something else that is very important. If or when your precious Mastiff passes, it is very important to let your other dogs see him. Dogs understand death. They will sniff him and they will grieve and then they will be ok. If he just goes missing, they don't know what happened and they will grieve much longer. Please let them say good bye! I had two cats one time. I still have one of them. The one I still have was terrified of outside but the other one would go in and out. They loved each other and Pee-nut (the one I still have) would sit on a end table and wait for China to come through the pet door. He would pounce on her and off they would go, playing. They slept cuddled up in each others arms. Unfortunally China was killed by a neighbors dog that got loose. I was so upset I buried her without letting Pee-nut see her. I just didn't think about it. He never knew what happened to her. He sat on that end table for months looking towards the pet door waiting for his friend to come in so they could play. It was so sad. I think that hurt me more than losing my little China! I will never let that happen again. There are even funeral homes that will let you bring in the pet of a deceased person after hours. To let them see that their human has passed. I think that is wonderful.
I'm very sorry your pet is sick, and I wish you the best.
When the time comes petloss.com is a wonderful place, I never knew there were people in this world who loved animals the way I do, but there are! My prayers are with you.

Oh,yes they know. Dogs are incrediably smart and sometimes humans don't give them the credit for that. I am sorry about your mastiff,I just lost my old collie a couple weeks ago. It is hard when you have old dogs that you have bonded with their whole life. God Bless

Dogs definately know. There have been several cases where dogs have actually smelled cancer cells in their owners before their owners even knew they were sick. sicknesses of many kinds have smells. and since dogs can smell hundreds of times better than a human, they know when someone is sick. cats can do it too, but dogs are better at it.

Yes. My cat just got an infection from another cat biting him in the cheek. My dog knew something was wrong with him before I did. They know when humans are sick also.

Yes. Most dogs can sense illness and if bad things are gonna happen. They can sense this in other animals or even humans.

They train dogs to alert people to when they're going to have a seizure. And I have heard of dogs pinpointing tumors in their masters. By the way, condolences on your "old guy."
