...even though a frightening number of my friends are "alternative", "new age" and all the rest of it, don't you think that if you have a mission in life it's vital to communicate it? and that means that you have to understand the people you're speaking to before you open your mouth? and being, to some extent, one of them?

This is where the evangelicals HAVE got it right, at least in the preaching I used to hear. I do accept that hippies are not guilty of the terrible crimes laid at the church's door from time to time. But self-righteousness has no place unless the other side is entrenched and clearly wrong. You have to try on the other person's shoes if you possibly can.

And you have to have a laugh. With everyone.

Jesus teaches us to go the extra mile, to give more than we receive and to love our neighbors. None of these are easy to do, so we have a lot of people who seek the excuse and live lukewarm lives, never daring to laugh at themselves because they feel guilt is more important. As Jesus realized in his last moments as a human, most people don't know what they do, so embrace your understanding and share irreguardless of the consequences here on earth, there really is a higher culture awaiting us.
