The National Association of Home Builders has a "Registered Remodelers" program that heavily screens the membership. It requires that members maintain liability and workers compensation insurance, are financially sound, have been in business for a specific length of time, etc.. They will be glad to give you the names of several members who work in your area and perform the type of work you wish to have done.

You do not mention the area in which you live. If you live in a metropolitan area, or fairly close to one, there will be a local chapter of the National Association of Home Builders. The following link will lead to the chapter in your area:

Good luck with your projects.

The best reference is word of mouth. Check with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, anyone you can think of who may have had some work done recently. Or, find a local builders association (some kind of trade association for builders and remodelers). You local building supply store will surely know of contractors in your area as well.

Wow! You've got some big plans!

The yellow pages are a good place to start. And I've used the Better Business Bureau to check on a number of businesses whose legitimacy I questioned.

Have any of your neighbors had work done recently? Ask if they can recommend someone. Or if you talk with the contractor, ask him for recommendations.

Good luck!

Your friends and family. Word of mouth is the best source of job offers any contractor could possibly have if the guy is good. If he isn't then you will hear about it from your peers.
