Any good studies done on this? Discussions I've come across seemed based on emotion not science.

I'd say avoid it completely. Too much is unknown and what we do know is bad.

Quoted from the page I linked as a source:

"Despite the manufacturer's claims to the contrary, sucralose is significantly absorbed and metabolized by the body. According to the FDA's "Final Rule" report, 11% to 27% of sucralose is absorbed in humans, and the rest is excreted unchanged in feces. According to the Japanese Food Sanitation Council, as much as 40% of ingested sucralose is absorbed."

Despite the manufacturer's claims... We are talking about companies. Companies wish to make money. They are not concerned with your health.

Well, each one has different effects. Aspartame (most commonly in diet sodas) has some pretty bad effects. Before it was approved by the FDA, it was rejected because it seemed to cause brain tumors in rats. However, in 1981 it was approved by the FDA when a new director took the wheel, who incidently was heavily financially involved in the artificial sweetener industry. However, recent studies haven't found a direct link, but there are still many unanswered questions. Additionally, it has been anecdotally accused of causing mood swings and emotional problems.

Sucrolose (Splenda) is a little newer, so it's hard to tell. Many believe it to be very harmful, and there are horror stories available at http://www.mercola.com/2000/dec/3/sucralose_testimonials.htm
Ultimatley, they have both been approved, but always with the disclaimer that they are dangerous at high doses. For the most part, however, you don't have to worry about high doses of these products, because they are so sweet (Splenda is about 600 times sweeter than sugar), VERY small doses are ingested. Even daily use is unlikely to cause negative effects.

There really is'nt enough science involved with these two sweetners for anyone to know for sure. I'm sure if you use them with moderation you would be fine, as with everything else.
