Whenever I take my 6 month old golden retriever to the dog park she acts like she is there to see the other people, not the dogs. Sometimes we have a hard time getting in the gate because the other dogs come to greet her and sometimes nip at her. She is very submissive and tucks her tail between her legs and/or tries to jump on the benches to get away. After awhile she calms down...I walk with her to the back area to settle her. But she doesn't want to play like the other dogs. She doesn't like them to jump on her and she won't jump on them. Someone there told me golden retrievers are like that. I just thought it was because she was an only puppy and didn't learn to play. So I'm wondering if it's the breed or the single puppy thing. Does anyone have a golden or a single pup that behaves like this?

She is being submissive as some dogs are when they are in a group. She must have a very docile personality. Golden retrievers are known for being that way. Enjoy it! I have a choclate lab who plays till he drives me crazy. He is sniffing everybodys poop, butt and business. Not a
quiet dog at all.

It's not breed or single puppy, it's preference. If she's not interested in playing with the other dogs, why would you want to force the issue? Not all dogs feel the need to chase, bite, and leap all over each other. It's actually somewhat rude for strange dogs to do this to each other, which is one of a number of reasons many people don't like dog parks.

If your dog is just as happy hanging out with other dogs calmly and peacefully, feel fortunate. That's a GOOD thing, and there are tons of people who would take that behavior in a second.

Get her a playmate at home, that's like taking a kid to a playground, and throwing it in with others it doesn't know. All dogs are not alike.
Another dog will be a companion to her, like a new pup, it will bring her to life, hopefully this will work. She could just be people oriented.

She's just a little insecure since she is still a baby. Give her time to get used to it. Bring her in at different times. Start at a time when there's less dogs and bring her favorite toy. Take her off her leash also.

With any animal if they know the other animals can beat them up they will be very submissive because they don't want to get beat up. I have cats that do this and a dog.

i imagine it is a sensible decision. Then your canines could have exercising and clean air. Your Golden must have all the images. you could ask your vet about what pictures your canines desires. i wish I helped. have interesting at the same time with your canines in the park!
