Though it can be a sign of schizophrenia, hearing voices does not automatically mean you have it. Audio hallucinations are a form of psychosis, which can be part of schizophrenia or a number of other mental disorders.
Audio hallucinations are caused by unusual brain chemistry (schizophrenia is linked to too much dopamine). One can have a genetic predisposition to psychosis, but stress can sometimes cause a psychotic episode to start.
Psychosis can usually be treated and managed by medications. Someone who is hearing voices should see a doctor as soon as possible, especially if the voices are telling him/her to do bad things.

Auditory hallucinations alone (without other senses being involved) are more likely a symptom of schizophrenia. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain.
Medications can help almost always. Sometimes people resist taking medications because of side effects. This is ok as long as the voices are not giving you commands to hurt yourself or someone else (negative as you said). But if the voices are encouraging you do to harm then you need to take medication and get them under control for everyone's sake. There's more the one medication for this, so if you get bad side effects tell you doctor and insist on trying something else. Don't quit the medication.

Two things can cause that. A class of medications known as hallucinogenics like LSD or combination of stimulants and hallucinogens like Ecstasy. So don't take them. (dopaminergic drugs)
Other is a condition known as schizophrenia. This condition is related to dopamine inbalancements too--again high levels of dopamine.
So what are the signs of schizophrenia?
Your hear voices, see things that do not exist and so on.
Characters that are not real. Negative characters that you run away from and protect yourself from. Watch the movie American Beauty. Thats a real example.
This condition is sometimes associated with a downside or depression like condition that can not be resolved with schizophrenic meds nor with antidepressants meds.(antidepressant meds act by increasing levels of serotonin like SSRIs or Tricyclics or MAOIs or COMT inhibitors).
Signs of hallucinogens?
An over stimulation of your sensory system: Subjects become more colorful, noises amplified, stronger smells. You also have sensory overlap, you smell with your eyes!! Not so real.
Treatment of Schizophrenia?
There are some that may help a bit, but no effect with negative signs like depression. Plus they have some side effects. I would imagine SEs would be similar to that of Parkinson's signs--lack of dopamine: Stiffness but not the shakiness.
Search for schizo.

This is usually your sub concious mind! And you tend to be negative to your self when others have been telling you something bad about yourself. Have you been made fun alot at school or home. This can also happian when you have a parent who tells you one thing and does another. A parent like that can sometimes cuase many mental problems. A good way to combat this is to start exerciseing or getting in touch with nature. We sometimes get so cuaght up in the physicall world, and doing activitys like hiking and things helps to conect yourself back to where you should be. Well good luck and remeber, you are not what happians to you! You are what you make yourself!

Schizophrenia.. Schizo-affective Disorder.. or in my case.. a very bad manic episode of bipolar disorder with psychotic traits..
could just be work or family stress that is out of control for you..
at any rate schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor and get a referral to a psychiatrist.. they can help you out much more than anybody here can possibly be able to..
It is not as uncommon as you would believe.. and the right medication has helped me alot with this problem of mine.. I haven't had it at all in a couple years now.. *crosses fingers*
I wish you the best of luck, I am sure it is very frustrating for you.. don't be afraid to get some help with this one.. it may be serious :).. There is a reason and logical explaination for it all.

Well not sleeping enough is a big part you need to sleep. If you have no problem sleeping then it could be a repressed memory that is causing to to hear things.
