yes it's rude. but, it's just your mom so you can say something to her in a NICE way...like, "This corn is delicious! I bet it would even be just as good with a little less salt next time."

A good rule is to show constructive criticism when someone asks, "how was the food?" If it's already good, just compliment it, of course. If it's bad, staying quiet usually does the trick. If you're always complimenting, and one day you don't, they may even ask what's wrong. But sometimes people don't expect a negative remark, so they get hurt. And constructive criticism can always start with something positive like "It's delicious, and I can tell you put so much work into it - the presentation was good, too. But, maybe next time you could put less salt (OR But, I'm not used to it being this salty.)" It just depends on how receptive the person is to being criticized.

Yes it's rude. I mean your mom or whoever cooked the dish put a lot of effort into the meal. I mean it's okay to complain but not in front of their face, there is a time and place for everything, your mom's feeling were probably hurt in the process. Now i'm not saying that you should hold your breath on everything ie your were having dinner at someone's house and the food it raw, that's a totally different story. Bottom Line if your a guest at someone's house even if it's your mothers don't complain.

No its not polite to comment on the food. I once got up from the table to get a steak knife to cut the meat I had a friend over and my mom was livid. I wasn't trying to comment on the toughness of the meat I just wanted to cut it easier. Unless you are the cook or helping with the meal you shouldn't comment.

It is impolite, Islamic ettiquettes says you either take the food in good faith or you find a way of avoiding it, but never make a bad comment about another person's cooking.

Yes, it is impolite. Someone went through the trouble of making your meal, so keep the comments to yourself, especially if they are smart aleck remarks. Don't you think that your mom realized that she put in too much salt?

Well you kinda got your answer there on your own when you upset your mother by criticizing her cooking.. I think it is impolite, your mother worked hard in that kitchen to be sure you had meal on your table to eat. Be thankful most don't get that from their mothers! Next time why not tell her Great Meal MOM , LET me DO THE DISHES.. then you'd be a Great son :-p

Yes it is impolite. If she had asked then a simple" it's a little salty" probably would have been recieved better. But if it was not at home or cooked by immediate family I say Never ever mention it.

Yes, people are sensitive. The best thing to do is to remove the excess salt and never comment negatively on anyone's cooking.

It may have been an accident, I don't make negative comments on someone elses cooking it's not nice and probably embarassed her and if she's your mom you'd know if her cooking always sucked right? If it doesn't taste good don't eat it. My mom's cooking sucks but I've told her different things I've tried while cooking and she's really coming along.

I think it would be okay to comment on people that are close to you ((like your mom)) but if your at a dinner party with friends that would be very impolite. Cook it yourself!! And give your mom a break:)
