Carbines are short barreled rifles. Orignally developed for use by the Calvary. A shorter & lighter weapon was more handy to a mounted rider than a long rifle. They tend also to be chambered in smaller calibers. In general Carbines have barrels 18"-22 " in length.

A carbine typically has a shorter barrel and smaller build but fire the same round as full sized rifles..
Although in some examples, some carbines fire smaller cartridges. Example, the M1 carbine to the M1 Garand. Both had a similar system (gas operated, rotating bolt) and the Garand fired a 30'06 while the carbine fired a .30 carbine round.
