Assume active duty means serving in Iraq? It takes about 18 hours to fly home.

I think I'd put a homing beacon on and go for a stroll through the sunni triangle and wait for the idiots to try and pick me up so they could torture and kill me....that way the good guys would have a new home for the 500 lbers..

Even though I do not support the current war effort, I do support our troops. If I were in the military, I would be fighting along side of them for you and everyone else in the USA. I would have made the commitment to fight, even till my death if that is what it meant. I myself, knowing I would be gone in 24 hours, would fight on, and die with honor. I think that to drop everything is rather selfish. There are no wrong or right answers here, only perspectives.

I wouldn't be a professional soldier if I dropped everything I was sworn to do. If I knew I was going to die anyway the best legacy I could leave my children would be that I never quit anything and never abandoned my fellow soldiers.

Assuming you mean anyone in any military, it depends. Which is your ultimate authority?

Is it your God, who you will be joining for Eternity?

Or is it the Premier, Prime Minister, President, Ayatollah, Commanding General, King, or Dictator who has caused you to be in the military?

Human or God, which do you go with ?

I'd stay, the people I was fighting with would need me to be there, I would abandon them, I'd ask the persons above me to give the news to my family and I'd go back to doing my job...it would be really hard, but I'd want to finish what I started...I wouldn't want to feel like a quitter when I died

I would go down in a blaze of Glory. Guns blazing right into the heart of the insurgency. I may go down but I would take as many of those SOBs with me as I could. I would rather die with honor then desert my post.

The two choices wouldn't be mutually exclusive for me. I'd ask my commanding officer to let me try a suicide run on Bin Laden's camp.

As I raised my rifle to his dirty, bearded face, I'd say, "President Bush says hello..... scumbag!"

I would die like a hero with no fear in a blase of enemy fire, saving my brothers.
