How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

Next time someone takes a shot at me I'll see if I can ask him if it was an assassination attempt or just another effort at murder. After spending 18 months in Iraq trying to avoid getting shot or blown up, the distinction between the 2 is of little concern to me.

Assassination is the deliberate killing of an important person, usually a political figure or other strategically important individual.
