what if mary did fornicate, producing jesus? wouldn't it make sense, to protect herself from the harsh jewish laws of the time, which would have required her death, to lie to her husband and convince him not to let her be punished? she would have been aware of the prophecies concerning the messiah, so she would have known exactly what story to tell. and if a young jesus grew up with his parents telling him that god had impregnated his mother and that he was the son of god, wouldn't he believe it, too?

then, he could have studied the prophecies himself, setting out to fulfill what he believed was his duty as god's son and the savior of his people.

please respond with your thoughts.

and i mean real, intelligent thoughts, not angry proclamations of blasphemy, heresy, or damnation.

to clarify, i didn't mean to write that joseph was her husband. if they had already been married, this couldn't be possible.

thank you, Taranto. i've heard the two terms used interchangeably, and that made sense to me, but your clarification does, too.

and the point is that joseph wouldn't have been content to have a child whose father was some other man and to be married to what he would have seen as "damaged goods." and the bible makes him out to be a lawful, god-fearing man, as well. so, yes, mary would have been vulnerable to severe punishment by the law--death, in fact--had she not had a very good excuse.

ramall1to,
i assumed my doubt in the bible's account of jesus' "miracles" was obvious.

It's the most likely skeptic's explanation. However, parthenogenesis does happen sporadically in higher animals, and rarity of such an event would satisfy both the scientists and the believers (who would claim it as a miracle).

Good questions. One thing you have left out of your thought pattern. Where would Jesus get the power to do the miracles He did, if he just believed He was the Messiah? It is a historical fact that Jesus did the miracles that are attributed to Him so I would ask that anyone prove that they can do what He did by their own power. Would God the Father open Heaven and state that this was His Beloved Son if he were in fact, not His Son? I can know the stories to tell and the things I need to do to be the President of the United States and even want to do those things but there is one thing that would stop me from doing it. The power or authority. IF you don't believe it, try it once and see how far you can get. Try to raise someone from the dead or do any of the other miracles Jesus did. See the flaws in that thinking? Jesus was real, the real deal, the real Saviour, the real Son of God, and nobody has or can duplicate any of what He did when He was on this Earth. It takes more than just a belief that you are something. It takes the power behind you to make it real.

I guess she could have fabricated it but that would be like me fabricating an alien abduction and influences to explain why I shot someone.Who's going to believe me?
Joseph had his doubts and was going to divorce Mary secretly(Matt.1:18,19)but an angel advised Joseph that things were indeed as Mary had explained.Luke 2:8 -14 tells of the angels proclaiming to the shepherds the birth of the Messiah.People forget after Jesus ascension Christians were persecuted and no one is going to withstand the type of torture Christians withstood then without truly believing in the reason for the persicusion.Christians where given the option to renounce their faith and not be fed to the lions or whatever the Romans felt like doing to them and very few Christians opted for the easier softer way.The dedication to Jesus that exist even today goes far beyond just an intellectual exersise.People call us fanatic and other uncomplementary words and some so called Christians deserve such harsh judgment(please read Matt.22:36-40.Anything beyond what Jesus said is important in serving God is man made.Nowhere in that statement do you read condemn or judge or force or any of that.)If you get a chance talk to one of Jehovah's Witnesses about some of your questions.Don't worry..We don't use hypnotism or cast spells on your person ordo black magic or voodoo to get you to listen. We use something better. The Truth.I can tell by your question you really want to know.I pray you continue to seek.
May Jah bless you with His truth and light.
The best to you.
Sincerely.

The immaculate conception has nothing to do with Virgin Birth. It is a Catholic belief that Mary was born without original sin. Non-Christians and most Protestants do not believe in Original Sin. That means that they believe that we were all immaculately conceived.

As for virgin birth -- I think someone it made up -- but I'm not ready to blame Mary for the lie. She wouldn't have been worried about the "harsh Jewish laws" of the time -- after all, she was married when she gave birth.

You have asked some intelligent questions--but I can not even play the what if game when the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is the person being studied---All I can do is believe the words that I have read in the Bible and it to be true!

I've actually recently thought of that a lot myself - and I'm not even really religious, so I'm not sure why that same thought has been popping into my head so frequently lately. (I do believe in God and am knowledgeable on the bible, but just not into organized religion.)

With that being said, I do consider my beliefs following the lines of Christianity, so I do feel guilty for having doubts about whether of not Jesus was the son of God or not because I do believe that he did die to save us all for our sins to his own belief.

I don't think so. Here is why.
Knowing how people are, eventually someone would have found out. Knowing how women were viewed and treated then, it wouldn't have taken a lot of persuasion to expose her.
And there were those angels that came and appeared to all the people telling them not to be afraid. That this was the will of God.

Girls were killed back then for adultery. What is more likely...the immaculate conception conspericy or that she made the whole thing up" OR that Constantine invented all of it. BTW...virgin wives back then were girls under 9 years old. Ya...god was a pedophile.

because god mentioned in all the books (Torah, bible,Koran) the prophecy of Jesus Christ and his miraculous birth by virgin Mary.
god said that he has chosen Mary and purified her and put her above all women of all nations.
therefore it was god's will to chose virgin Mary to give birth for Jesus.
of course the Jews knew it was gonna happen as the prophecy says in the Torah and thy were so afraid of this prophecy coz all their religion would come to an end if a new message was to be revealed.
they accused Mary of committing adultery and they didn't acknowledge Jesus as the messenger of god. till this day.
