If the visitors are wearing shoes when they arrive, then you should too. I've had that same situation happen to me. I would come out with no socks on or shoes on and my mother would tell me to go back to my room and put some on. So if they are wearing some, then its customary you should too; unless the host or hostess said to take them off by the door because they don't want to track dirt in the house or because of religious reasons etc. Sometimes it is appropriate and other times it is not. So please wear shoes and don't make your guests feel uncomfortable.Or take your cue from what the guests do or your host or hostess does. Hope this helps!

If your visitors were invited to some special event you are hosting at your home, I believe you should have footwear, even if it's flip flops (they make very fancy ones nowadays). If the visitors are family and have come for a visit for a few days, wear whatever you want.
Even at the end of the invited event, if your guest become comfortable and begin to slip off their shoes first, follow the leader!

I seldom wear shoes at home. If they are invited guests, then I dress accordingly for them. If they just show up & I am barefoot, I stay barefoot. I couldn't say how the visitors feel, but I have an idea that it's no big deal.

It depends on who your visitors are. For example, if it's friends/family, then I would say it is not bad manners to be barefoot. If it is a formal visit from someone, such as your boss, it may be construed as bad manners. However, it also depends on your culture, house rules, etc. Many people have rules at home that require removing your shoes upon entry, to avoid tracking in dirt and mud.

Too bad if it makes visitors uncomfortable. I hate wearing shoes, especially in the house. I do wear shoes when I go out running errands though. At home I rarely wear shoes unless I'm doing yardwork.

Unless you are specifically having a dinner party or something where attire of some sort is required, I don't know why it would be bad manners. Most people, if they want to keep their carpets cleaner, ask people to remove their shoes upon entry of the home, so what difference would socks or no socks make?

I think it depends on where your from and how you are raised. In my home, you take your shoes off at the door. One: because I would like to keep my carpet as long as possible and Two: because I want people to make themselves at home. Who is comfortable chillin out, with tight shoes on their feet? Some people would look at it as bad etiquette. It all depends.

Most of the homes I visit have a "shoes off" policy. The host may or may not provide slippers for the guests.

It depends on you as well as the visitor coming to your house.
