This is controversial, but I think most physicians still recommend a high fiber, low fat diet. And if first degree relatives have had colon cancer, early screening with colonoscopy is very important.

Colon cancer is one of those diseases that if caught early is totally curable with minimal effort.

The overwhelming majority of colon cancers begin in a polyp that protrudes into the inside of the colon. From earliest sign of polyp to invasive cancer is estimated at about 10 years or so.

SO.....if you get full colonoscopy every 5 or so years, you can sit around and think of other things to worry about. If they find a polyp in there, they snag it out and send it for biopsy studies, but the docs who look through the lens have a pretty good idea if it is benign or malignant. (almost all small polyps are benign).

Despite how unpleasant the procedure sounds, you will remember NOTHING of it . The most unpleasant part is no solid foods the day before, and heavy duty laxatives (they use the term "bowel prep") the evening prior to the procedure.

On the other hand, fasting for a day REALLY makes the food taste good that next day, gives you a whole new appreciation for the simple pleasures of life.

I had my second one this past week. I would suggest making a deal with a friend who is also overdue for one, and schedule them on two consecutive days. You can have the preliminary appointments the same day. You will be groggy when released, and should not drive for a few hours, so you can buddy up for that reason if for none other.
