considering that Jeep is a Daimler-Chrysler brand, I'd guess it might be built in the same place as the Mercedes -- I'm looking into it...
This article says the Liberty Diesel was a Detroit Diesel / VM Motori model: http://www.allpar.com/model/jeep/liberty-review.html
This article says they've discontinued the Liberty Diesel: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/06/23/MTGJGJIBH81.DTL
This one says the Grand Cherokee Diesel Engine will be built by Mercedes-Benz: http://www.shortnews.com/shownews.cfm?id=54753&CFID=18035145&CFTOKEN=76045138
I hope this answers your question!

VI Moto of Italy. The 2.8L CRD is a VW design. I own a 2005, I Love It!!! If you have a particular question about 'em, please just ask.
As for the Jeep Liberty Diesel not being offered in 2007 in the U.S.
This is correct, YET, since 2003 the Jeep Liberty Diesel EXPORT MODEL, built in Toledo, Ohio and sold in Europe has been a very good sell model for Jeep. As of the 2007 model year the Jeep Cherokee Diesel, as the Liberty is known in Europe, and the the New Jeep Wrangler Diesel will be offered in Europe and I believe in Canada. Same engine since 2003.

For 2007, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel will have its engine designed and built by Mercedes-Benz. The vehicle will be made in the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, and the 3.0-liter CRD engine will be made in the Benz Berlin Marienfelde Plant in Berlin, Germany: http://www.prnewswire.com/cgi-bin/stories.pl?ACCT=109&STORY=/www/story/06-01-2006/0004372173&EDATE=

The Liberty crd motors is made my VM Motori of Italy. Here is the web site

Its considered to be a decent engine. In European diesel engine standards, its not as refined or as quiet as the offerings from MB. One major weak spot is the timing belt. The belt would need to be replaced more frequently then a timing chain.
