He said he would be hanged. That would make hanging him the truth, etc. The terms are reversed in dacihak's version.

Answer: "I want to be hanged."
Reason for "I want to be hanged":
If the soldier was hanged, it would true, requiring the soldier to be shot. If the man was shot, the statement would be a lie and require the soldier to be hanged. This cycle would continue indefinitely.
Reason against "I want to be shot":
If the soldier requests to be shot, then shooting him would create a true statement, requiring him to be shot, which has already occured. Thus ends the chain.
