Start looking through the wedding magazines and see if you can find a style you like. Once you have narrowed it down to a style you like, then hit the bridal shops. If you feel pressured by the sales staff when you're in a shop - leave. There are plenty of other options than to put up with a pushy, know it all, salesperson. The town where I live had one such store - "had" being the operative word there. They wouldn't listen to a brides style preference or budget and would come into the change room with you, not allowing one of your friends (possibily your Maid of Honour) to help you out. They are now out of business.

Now, if you can't find the dress you like when going through the shops, there are a couple of more options. If you know someone who is good at sewing, visit a fabric shop and look through the patterns - you might find what you are looking for and you get a wider range of possible fabrics to choose from. The second option is to find a custom dress designer. They are not as expensive as some people think, especially when you might have to pay for alterations on a dress you buy in a bridal shop.
