We were walking and then she let out a yelp. I looked at her leg and saw a large black ant and I tried to flick it off. It didn't budge so I had to grab a hold of it and throw it off. Then I noticed that there was a little black thing still stuck in her skin so I had to remove it. She's lying on the couch and pretty uncomfortable. What should we do?

Well, if it was a black ant, then it wasnt a fire ant. Fire ants are either completely or nearly all red. In other words, either 2 body segments or all 3 segments are red. If it was a larger than normal black ant, it was most likely a soldier ant from a regular ant colony, or maybe an army ant.

Check the links below for more info. The first link shows pictures of fire ants, and tells how to identify them. The second link is a FAQ page about fire ants. The third link is about allergies to fire ants, which can be fatal to people who have a specific allergy to fire ant venom (which is fairly rare). Best advice, if it was a large black ant, call her doctor or a walk in emergency clinic and ask how best to proceed. I say this as their as extra precautions need to be taken because of the pregnancy. If she begins to develop breathing problems or a fever, take her to the ER immediately.

your first thing as she is pregnant is to call her doctor and let them know of any symtoms. it wasn't a fire ant as they are red and the fire ant has a army of them on you and bite all at once. you feel like your leg is on fire. had that happen to me and the va doctors explained how they bite and why. yours though was of a species that is pretty big. each person is differant. some can get bit by a ant and nothing or be allergic and not know. there are 1500 ant species known by the discovery channel. there are large ants that are actually soldier ants and they put a hurt on you. the venom in ants usually won't kill people, but you will see a reaction as we are allergic to it. check with her obyn doctor. good luck with a healthy baby.

Fire ants are not big or black. If you live where they have bullet ants, then you need to go to the doctor.

I think she'll be okay if you do baking soda / oatmeal / or caladryl lotion salve. It will help take sting out. Also, check with her doctor but a homeopathic for stings - apis - might help.

Oh-- it does sound like a tick -- if head's stuck in skin, you must get it out.
Time for the DOCTOR.

fire ants sting is pretty painful, I doubt she is in any danger from it. If it swells up or still hurts tomorrow really bad then see a doc. It probably will just itch tomorrow.

i would go to the doc because it doesnt sound like a regular fire ant and if it is poiseness or if she is allergic it could effect the baby so i would go b4 it gets worse.

Go ahead and take her to the Emergency Room. IF it isn't a big deal they can help her feel better and if it is you're already there. Best wishes
